Ewe Iroko – A look at Medicinal and Spiritual Importance

One Yoruba proverb says "Okere gun ori iroko, oju ode da" (Squirrel climbs Iroko tree and hunter's becomes helpless). The proverb was coined due to many branches and leaves that Iroko tree has by nature.

Ewe Iroko (or Iroko Oluwere), known in English as African Teak and botanically as Milicia regia, comes from the sacred Iroko tree, one of the most spiritually respected trees in Yoruba land. The Iroko tree is considered mystical and powerful, often associated with ancestral spirits and divine protection.

The leaves, bark, and roots of the Iroko tree are used in traditional medicine to treat fever, wounds, and stomach disorders. Spiritually, Ewe Iroko is regarded as a powerful protective and cleansing herb, used in several Yoruba rituals for breaking curses, removing bad luck, and attracting blessings.

Because of its strong spiritual energy, the Iroko tree is rarely cut down carelessly, as it is believed to be inhabited by powerful spirits.
