Understanding Yoruba Vowels and Consonants

Having gone through the Yoruba Alphabet lesson, today we want to talk about Yoruba Vowels and Consonants.

To speak Yoruba fluently, you need a strong foundation in its vowels and consonants. Yoruba is phonetic, meaning words are pronounced as they are written. This lesson focuses on identifying and practicing Yoruba sounds.

The Yoruba Alphabet
The Yoruba alphabet consists of 25 letters, categorized into vowels and consonants.

Yoruba Vowels
There are 7 oral vowels (Faweli Airanmupe) and 5 nasalized vowels (Faweli Aranmupe) in Yoruba.

Oral Vowel Pronunciation Examples
A As in Father
E As in Bait
As in Bed (note the dot at the base)
I As in See
O As in Go
As in Cut
U As in Pull

Note: The difference between "E" and "Ẹ" and "O" and "Ọ" is critical to pronunciation.

NASAL VOWELS
Now, let's take a look at the nasal vowel which is popularly referred to as "Faweli Aranmupe" in Yoruba Language. This vowels are 5 in total.

Yoruba Consonants (Konsonanti Yoruba)
The Yoruba language uses 18 consonants. Let's learn those consonants and their examples one after the other.

Note:
Yoruba does not use the letters "C", "Q", "V", "X", and "Z".

Fun Activity: Word Game
1.  Form words from random combinations of vowels and consonants. Example: Combine "Ṣ" + "A" = Ṣà (Choose).

1.  Memorize the Yoruba vowels and consonants.
2.  Write five Yoruba words using both vowels and consonants.
3. Practice pronouncing the nasalized vowels with real-life examples
