Despite facing numerous adversities and encounters with both human and supernatural forces—some helpful, some malevolent—Ireke Onibudo demonstrates incredible industry, tenacity, and bravery. 

The story follows his journey from a state of extreme deprivation and poverty to a position of royalty and prosperity in a foreign land. His experiences are a series of "appointments, disappointments, endorsements, and denials" that ultimately shape his transformation. The novel also features a prominent episode where Ireke Onibudo recounts his life to a narrator, including tales of his escapes from dangers like a gargantuan mermaid and a destructive flying python, and his eventual rise to kingship. The narrative emphasizes themes of resilience, destiny, and the triumph of the human spirit against overwhelming odds.
