Location and Geography
Ile-Ife is situated in the heart of Osun State, bordered by Modakeke to the east, Ifetedo to the south, and Moro to the north. It lies within the tropical rainforest belt of Nigeria, with fertile land that supports farming. The town is easily accessible by road from Osogbo, Ibadan, and other major cities in the region.

Cultural and Historical Significance
Often called “the cradle of the Yoruba,” Ile-Ife is believed in Yoruba tradition to be the place where Olodumare, the Supreme God, sent Oduduwa to establish the earth. It is also home to the Ooni of Ife, one of the most respected traditional rulers in Yoruba land. The city is renowned for its terracotta and bronze artworks, many of which date back centuries and are treasured worldwide. Festivals such as the Olojo Festival draw visitors from across Nigeria and beyond.

People and Occupations
The people of Ile-Ife are predominantly Yoruba, and many are engaged in farming, trading, and craft-making. The fertile soil makes crops like yam, cassava, cocoa, and plantain abundant. The town also thrives in bead-making, cloth weaving, and pottery, crafts that have been passed down for generations.

Unique Features of the Town
Ile-Ife is home to Obafemi Awolowo University, one of Nigeria’s most prestigious institutions of higher learning. Its cultural sites, such as the Ooni’s Palace, the Ife Museum, and the sacred grove of Oke Mogun, attract historians, tourists, and researchers. The town’s blend of ancient heritage and modern development makes it a place of both deep history and vibrant daily life.
