Ọya – Yoruba Orisha of Winds in Yoruba Belief with Details of Oriki

Ọya is one of the most powerful and dynamic Orisha in Yoruba belief. She represents winds, tempests, change, and the vital force of transformation. Known as the goddess of the River Niger, Ọya controls the storms, markets, and the mysteries of life and death. She is seen as both fierce and nurturing, a deity who clears away the old to make room for the new.

The Yoruba regard Ọya as a guardian of the marketplace, a place of constant change and exchange. She is also associated with ancestors and the spirit world, standing at the threshold between life and death. Through the wind, she communicates the unseen forces, and through the storm, she brings renewal. Ọya is often invoked during times of change, transition, or when bold action is needed.

In Yoruba communities, Ọya is respected as a fierce warrior who cannot be ignored, yet also as a motherly figure who protects her children with fierce love.

Ọya is closely associated with Ṣàngó (the god of thunder), often seen as his consort. Together, they represent the thunderstorm — Ṣàngó bringing thunder and lightning, while Ọya controls the winds and storms. This powerful union symbolizes strength, balance, and unstoppable force.
