Confirmed Yoruba Medicine and Herbs for Persistent Hiccups

Among the Yoruba, health conditions are tied to body balance, lifestyle, and general well being. One such condition is Esuke (hiccup), which, while often seen as a mild disturbance today, was taken seriously by our forefathers—especially when it became persistent or abnormal.
yoruba medicine to treat esukeIn Yoruba thought, ordinary hiccups were considered natural, sometimes caused by eating too quickly, swallowing air, or irritation of the stomach. However, when hiccups lasted too long, recurred frequently, or resisted common remedies, they were viewed as signs of imbalance in the body.

The Yoruba developed Ogun fún Esuke, a healing system that combined herbs and roots to reduce hiccups and prevent them from turning into prolonged discomfort or spiritual affliction. This remedy was applied to both children and adults, though special care was taken for infants and the elderly, who were considered more vulnerable.

Symptoms Persistent Hiccup
In Yoruba tradition, elders observed patterns and signs to decide when ordinary hiccup had crossed into a worrisome state that needed Ogun fún Esuke:

(i) Unusual duration — Hiccup that continues for hours or even days.
(ii) Persistent chest movement — Continuous spasms that make breathing or eating difficult.
(iii) Associated weakness — The body feels drained after long bouts of hiccup.
(iv) Pain or discomfort — Burning sensation in the chest or stomach while hiccuping.
(v) Irritation and restlessness — Continuous hiccuping makes a person anxious or unable to relax.
(vi) Loss of appetite — Some sufferers refuse food because eating worsens the condition.
(vii) Sudden embarrassment — Persistent hiccups interrupt speech and social interaction, causing discomfort.

How Our Forefathers Treated Esuke in the Past
When hiccups became stubborn or worrisome, Yoruba elders and healers employed herbal remedies:
1) Herbal infusions —
Leaves and roots were boiled into light teas to calm the chest and stomach.
2) Direct chewing of herbs —
Some remedies involved chewing bitter-tasting roots or leaves believed to “shock” the body into stopping hiccups.
3) Massage and rubbing —
Herbal pastes or oils were rubbed on the chest or throat to relax spasms.
4) Dietary adjustments —
Avoiding certain foods that were believed to worsen hiccups, like overly hot or spicy meals.

The Healing Process in Traditional Practice
When preparing remedies for Ogun Esuke, Yoruba elders followed structured methods to ensure both potency and balance:

1) Gathering roots, leaves, or barks considered most effective for cleansing the stomach.
2) Preparing concoctions in drink, tonic, or powdered form for easy intake.
3) Administering the remedy first in small quantity to observe reaction.
4) Supporting treatment with light meals or fasting to help purge worms.

Safety First: Important Contraindications and Considerations
•  Children under 1 year — Remedies should not be given without expert guidance.
•  Pregnancy — Some herbs may cause contractions and must be avoided.
•  Weak patients — Strong purging herbs must be reduced in dosage.
•  Source of herbs — Avoid materials gathered from polluted or chemically treated areas.
