Confirmed Yoruba Medicine and Herbs for Stomach Worms

Among the Yoruba, health is seen as a balance of body, and environment. When this balance is broken, sickness arises. One common ailment that troubled both children and adults is aràn (stomach worms). Too many worms in the body reduce appetite, weaken the flesh, and make children sickly. Even today, doctors advise regular de-worming because worms feed on the body’s strength and cause long-term harm if ignored.
ogun aran inu to treat stomach wormsOur forefathers, in their wisdom, developed Ogun Aràn — a traditional system of healing designed to flush worms out of the stomach and restore vitality. These remedies were more than just “herbs”; they were prepared with precision, combining plants that cleanse the digestive system, purge parasites, and return balance to the body. In Yoruba belief, worms are not only physical intruders but also signs of inner imbalance.

Symptoms that necessitate the need for Ogun Aran:
Yoruba Elders were trained to recognize signs that worms were troubling the body. Some of these included:

1) Persistent stomach pain – Sharp or dull aches in the belly.
2) Loss of appetite – The person avoids food or feels full quickly.
3) Swollen belly in children – A common visible sign linked to worm infestation.
4) Frequent vomiting or nausea – Especially after eating certain meals.
5) Weight loss and weakness – Even when food is taken, the body grows thin.
6) Restlessness at night – Children turning and crying in sleep.
7) Teeth grinding – Traditionally believed to signal hidden worms.
8) Sudden tiredness – Loss of energy without any hard work.

How Our Forefathers Treated Aràn in the Past
When worms were suspected, Yoruba elders used a careful system of cleansing remedies:
1.  Herbal decoctions — Roots, leaves, and bark boiled together to purge the stomach.
2.  Bitter-tasting herbs — Believed to drive out worms that thrive in sweet environments.
3.  Purgatives — Plants that encouraged bowel movement, helping flush parasites.
4.  Aftercare with light foods — Thin pap (ogi), light yam porridge, or simple soups to restore strength once worms had been expelled.

The Healing Process in Traditional Practice
When preparing remedies for Ogun Aràn, Yoruba elders followed structured steps to ensure both physical potency and spiritual cleansing:
•  Collecting herbs and roots believed to have purging power, often gathered in the early morning.
•  Washing, pounding, or boiling them to prepare as decoction, powder, or tonic.
•  Administering the medicine in measured doses to avoid weakness from excessive purging.
•  Following up with light food and rest to restore strength.

Differences Between Yoruba and Modern Worm Treatment
While both Yoruba and modern systems seek to eliminate worms, their approaches differ:
1) Focus of healing —
Yoruba remedies emphasize body cleansing, and restoration; modern medicine focuses on directly killing parasites with drugs.
2) Materials used —
Yoruba healers relied on herbs, roots, and natural purgatives; modern medicine uses syrups, tablets, or chemical de-wormers.
3) Approach to recurrence — Yoruba treatment often included protective rituals and diet adjustment; modern treatment recommends scheduled de-worming every few months.

Safety First: Important Contraindications and Considerations
•  Children’s dosage — Remedies must be measured carefully to avoid dehydration or excess purging.
•  Underlying conditions — Very weak or malnourished children must be treated cautiously.
•  Quality of source — Herbs from polluted or chemically treated areas should never be used.
