Confirmed Yoruba Medicine and Herbs for Fearlessness and Boldness

Among the Yoruba, courage is not just a natural trait but a vital quality needed to face life’s challenges. A person who lacks bravery is often described as “Ojo" (coward), which means they are easily afraid, hesitant, or weak in spirit. Such a person may struggle in leadership, decision-making, or even defending themselves in times of difficulty. To correct this imbalance, our forefathers developed Ogun Ikiya — a traditional remedy believed to replace fear with boldness, restore inner strength, and fortify the body against weakness.
ogun ikiya for natural bravenessOgun Ikiya is more than a medicine; it is a psychological empowerment. The Yoruba believe that fear is not only in the body but also in the mind and the orí (inner head). In many cases, chants, prayers, and symbolic rituals accompanied the medicine to “activate” bravery from within.

For centuries, this remedy was used by warriors, hunters, traders, and even ordinary men and women who needed confidence in their daily lives. It was also given to children who were too timid, ensuring they grew up strong and ready to face responsibilities.

Symptoms Linked to Fearfulness (Aiyà ńjá)
In Yoruba tradition, fear was not seen as mere shyness but as a condition that could weaken a person’s destiny. Elders identified different physical, and emotional signs of this state:

1) Sudden trembling of the body in tense situations.
2) Cold sweat or heavy breathing during confrontation.
3) Weak voice or inability to speak firmly in public.
4) Avoidance of responsibilities, especially leadership roles.
5) Constant hesitation or delay in making decisions.
6) Fear of darkness, solitude, or confronting authority.

How Our Forefathers Treated Ogun Ikiya in the Past
The preparation and use of Ogun Ikiya followed structured steps. These included:

•  Herbal strengthening — Leaves and roots believed to empower the heart and blood were prepared into drinks or charms.
•  Incantations of bravery — Chants invoking Ogun (the god of iron) or Òrìṣà linked to courage were recited.
•  Spiritual fortification — Protective amulets were tied around the waist, wrist, or neck to prevent fear.
•  Symbolic actions — A fearful person might be made to walk alone at night with protective herbs to train courage.
•  Communal encouragement — Elders and warriors encouraged the person, reminding them of strength and the pride of facing challenges.
Few out of plants, roots and barks needed to prepare medicine for bravery include:
1) Ewe Ata-ile
2) Ewe Odan
3) Ewe Alupaida
4) Ewe Ope
5) Egbo Igi Peregun
6) Ewe Igin-so-igba
7) Ewe Peregun

The Healing Process in Traditional Practice
When preparing remedies for Ogun Ikiya, Yoruba elders followed structured steps to ensure efficiencies:
a) Collecting herbs at the right time — Some plants were gathered early in the morning when they were believed to carry greater potency.
b) Purifying and pounding materials — Leaves, roots, or barks were ground into powder, tonic, or charm form.
c) Adding chants of courage — Incantations were spoken over the medicine to awaken bravery in the user.
d) Administering gradually — First doses were given carefully to test effect before full usage.
e) Combining with practice — Users were sometimes tasked with symbolic actions, like walking alone at night, to activate inner fearlessness.

Differences Between Yoruba and Modern Treatments for Fear
While both Yoruba and modern systems address fear and anxiety, their approaches differ:
•  Focus of healing —
Yoruba remedies target courage and destiny; modern medicine targets brain chemistry and psychology.
•  Materials used —
Yoruba healers used herbs, chants, and charms; modern treatment uses therapy sessions and medications.
•  Approach to recurrence —
Yoruba healing emphasized inner transformation and ancestral connection; modern practice often relies on continuous medication or counseling.

Safety First: Important Contraindications and Considerations
a) Children and sensitive individuals — Some herbs may be too strong for small children or highly sensitive people.
b) Underlying conditions — People with mental illness or seizures were treated with caution.
c) Purity of source — Herbs must never be taken from polluted or spiritually unclean places.
