Yoruba Herbal Remedy for General Body Infection

Among the Yoruba people, infections are seen as disturbances that affect not just one part of the body but the general wellbeing of an individual. The word “Awogba-Arun” literally means "Multipurpose". It is a specialized type of trado-medicine preparation that treat all forms of infections that cause general weakness, internal heat, body pains, discharges etc.
agbo awogba arunIn traditional Yoruba medicine, health is the harmony between blood, body fluids, and the inner strength, this is why they say "Okun Inu ni a fi n gbe t'ode" (Inner strength powers physical being). Once infection enters the system, it corrupts the blood and weakens the inner energy that sustains health. Therefore, Agbo Awogba-Arun was prepared to cleanse the blood, flush out impurities, and make body be in general well being. The use of roots, leaves, and barks in the preparation was based on their ability to purify the system naturally without destroying its inner composition.

Yoruba elders believed that ignoring infection was dangerous because a small internal infection could grow into a life-threatening condition. Hence, whenever signs such as persistent fever, discharge, or body odor appeared, it was taken seriously and treated promptly with appropriate herbal mixtures. These preparations aimed not only to treat symptoms but also to strengthen the body against future infections.

Symptoms that necessitate the need for Ogun Awogba Arun
In identifying general infections, our forefathers depended on physical observation and patterns of discomfort that signified an imbalance in the body. Common symptoms they recognized included:
•  Persistent fever or hot body temperature.
•  Loss of appetite and general body weakness.
•  Unpleasant body odor despite good hygiene.
•  Burning sensation while urinating.
•  Abnormal vaginal or urethral discharge.
•  Rashes or sores on the skin that refuse to heal.
•  Pain in the lower abdomen or pelvic area.
•  Swelling of lymph nodes in the armpit or groin.
•  Thick saliva or dry mouth.
•  Yellowish coloration of the eyes or nails (in severe cases).
•  Headache and fatigue after little activity.
•  Restlessness or discomfort due to internal heat.

How Our Forefathers Treated General Infection in the Past
Our forefathers understood that infection spreads through the bloodstream and body fluids. To fight it, they developed Agbo Awogba-Arun, a combination of natural herbs and roots designed to cleanse and purify the entire system. Their method focused on eliminating impurities, easing pain, and cooling internal heat without disturbing the body’s natural balance.
1) Herbal Decoctions: Various leaves, roots, and barks were boiled together to produce a warm herbal drink that helped cleanse the blood and fight internal infection. Different leaves have been used in the past to prepare Awogba Arun medicine, amongst them are:-
1)  Ewe Asuwon
2)  Ewe Taba
3)  Ewe Agba-arin

The Healing Process in Traditional Practice
Yoruba healers followed well-defined steps when preparing and administering Agbo Awogba-Arun, ensuring safety, consistency, and potency of results:
1.  Selection of Materials – Roots, leaves, and barks were chosen based on their known purifying and antibacterial properties. Each plant part was believed to serve a specific function — cleansing the blood, cooling the body, or restoring appetite.
2.  Proper Timing of Collection – Herbs were often harvested in the early morning when their natural moisture and potency were believed to be highest.
3.  Medicine Preparation – The materials were thoroughly washed, cut, and boiled over a gentle fire to extract the healing essence without burning or over-thickening the mixture.
4.  Dosage and Observation – The herbal preparation was taken in measured doses, usually morning and night, with close monitoring of the patient’s temperature, urine color, and strength.

Differences Between Yoruba and Modern Treatment
•  Nature of Treatment –
Yoruba medicine emphasizes natural purification and body cleansing using herbs and roots, while modern medicine targets infection with antibiotics and laboratory-tested drugs.
•  Focus of Healing –
Traditional methods focus on restoring natural balance in the body, while modern treatment targets microorganisms directly.
•  Effect on the Body –
Herbal remedies strengthen the immune system and remove toxins, whereas some modern drugs may cause side effects such as weakness or digestive upset.
•  Accessibility –
Yoruba treatment materials are naturally available and affordable, while modern medical treatment may require hospital visits and laboratory tests.

Safety First: Important Contraindications and Considerations
a) Pregnancy and Lactation – Some potent herbs are unsafe for pregnant or breastfeeding women. They must never use Agbo Awogba-Arun without guidance from a qualified herb specialist.
b) Underlying Conditions – Individuals with liver, kidney, or chronic health problems should avoid strong decoctions unless recommended by a trained herbal practitioner.
c) Source Quality – Plants grown with chemicals, pesticides, or harvested from polluted areas can cause harm instead of healing. Herbs must be obtained from clean and trusted environments.
d) Dosage Control – Overconsumption of herbal decoctions may lead to stomach irritation or dehydration. The preparation must always be used in moderation.
