Powerful Yoruba Back to Sender Traditional Medicine

Among the Yoruba people, life is not only about the visible world but also about unseen forces that shape human experiences. One of the greatest concerns of our forefathers was bewitchment – hidden attacks that could manifest as sudden sickness, setbacks, or misfortune without a clear physical explanation. To them, a person could be physically healthy and hardworking, yet face constant failure because of unseen hands working against his or her progress.
ogun arobi back to sendTo respond to this challenge, Yoruba traditional medicine developed Ogun Arobi, meaning “Back to Sender Medicine.” This preparation was believed to act as a protective shield, ensuring that any evil intended for an innocent person does not only lose its effect but is also returned to the source. Unlike other protective medicines that merely prevent harm, Arobi was unique because it actively repelled attacks, sending them back to the origin without harming the innocent receiver.

This practice was based on the Yoruba belief in balance and justice. If someone tried to destroy another unjustly, the medicine ensured that the energy of destruction circled back to the sender. Thus, Ogun Arobi was highly sought after by chiefs, warriors, traders, and ordinary people who wanted protection against envy, jealousy, and spiritual aggression.

Symptoms Observed by Our Forefathers
When a person was believed to be under spiritual attack, the Yoruba did not always rely on dreams or divination alone; they also observed physical and social changes that hinted at hidden affliction:
1) Sudden and repeated failure in business or work without clear reasons.
2) Strange sickness that resisted normal herbal or modern treatment.
3) Restlessness, sleepless nights, and constant fear.
4) Loss of favor in the eyes of people, even where one is qualified or deserving.
5) Unexplained accidents, breakdowns, or setbacks occurring in patterns.
6) Emotional heaviness or feeling “pressed down” as though a burden is on the body.

How Our Forefathers Treated Bewitchment in the Past
Yoruba healers used different strategies with Ogun Arobi to ensure that the innocent were freed from harm while the aggressor bore the consequence of their actions:
(1) Herbal Preparations – Leaves and barks known for their cleansing and protective qualities were prepared and applied as ointments, baths, or consumed in decoctions to fortify the body against negative forces. Amongst potent leaf with ground breaking potency previously used when preparing Ogun Atude are:
1)  Efo Yanrin
2)  Ewe Yunyun
3)  Ewe Eyin Olobe
4)  Ewe Irawo Ile
5)  Ewe Osepotu
6)  Ewe Oju Oro
7)  Koro Isin
8) Ewe Ajeobale
9) Eepo Obo (Obo Tree bark)

The Healing Process in Traditional Practice
Our forefathers believed Ogun Arobi required careful preparation and discipline for full effectiveness:
1.  Collection of Herbs –
Roots, leaves, and barks were selected carefully, usually from plants associated with protection and resilience.
2.  Preparation Methods –
Some herbs were pounded fresh, while others were dried and boiled into decoctions. The medicine could be administered as body rub, drink, or herbal bath.
3.  Consistency in Use –
Protection was not seen as a one-time act; patients were encouraged to use the preparation regularly until signs of relief and freedom appeared.
4.  Preventive Strengthening –
Even after healing, many continued with lighter versions of the medicine to prevent future attacks and to maintain balance.

Differences Between Yoruba and Modern Treatment
(a) Yoruba Approach – Focused on prevention, protection, and natural redirection of harmful forces through herbs.
(b) Modern Approach – Does not recognize “bewitchment” in medical terms but may address symptoms as stress, depression, or psychosomatic illness.
(c) Underlying Philosophy – Yoruba healing integrates body, environment, and unseen forces, while modern medicine limits treatment to biological and psychological causes.

Safety First: Important Contraindications and Considerations
1) Pregnancy and Lactation – Some protective herbs are too strong for pregnant or breastfeeding women and must be avoided.
2) Underlying Conditions – Individuals with liver, kidney, or chronic health problems should use lighter preparations.
3) Children and Elders – Gentler doses were used to avoid weakness or overreaction in these groups.
4) Source Quality – Herbs must come from clean, chemical-free, and trusted sources, otherwise they may cause more harm than healing.
