Yoruba Herbal Remedy for Diabetes

Among the Yoruba people, Ìto Súgà — known in modern medicine as Diabetes Mellitus — is considered more than just a sickness of sweetened urine. It is seen as a condition where the blood becomes “too hot” or “too thick”, disturbing the natural flow of energy and moisture within the body. Yoruba healers understood long ago that when the body’s inner water is no longer well-balanced, excessive thirst, frequent urination, and body weakness set in.
agbo ito sugar to treat diabetesOur forefathers observed that this condition often affected both young and old but was more common among those who ate heavily without moderation or those who lived a less active life. They believed that when the ifunpa ẹ̀jẹ̀ (blood pressure) is not in harmony, the sugar level in the blood begins to rise, leading to various complications if untreated.

To manage and correct this imbalance, they developed Agbo Ìto Súgà — a powerful herbal mixture composed of roots, leaves, and barks that cools the body’s internal heat, purifies the blood, and regulates excessive sugar. It is one of the oldest Yoruba herbal treatments for maintaining healthy blood composition and preventing the breakdown of vital organs.

Symptoms of Ito Sugar (Diabetes)
Our forefathers were skilled in observing the human body to recognize early and advanced symptoms of Ìto Súgà. Some of the common signs they noted included:
•  Excessive thirst and constant desire to drink water.
•  Frequent urination, even during the night.
•  Sudden loss of weight despite regular eating.
•  Persistent body weakness and tiredness.
•  Dryness of the mouth and throat.
•  Wounds that take a long time to heal.
•  Frequent infections or boils on the skin.
•  Poor eyesight or blurred vision.
•  Numbness or tingling sensation in the feet.
•  Excessive sweating and heat around the chest region.

How Our Forefathers Treated Diabetes in the Past
1) Herbal Misture preparation:
The first step was to prepare herbs that cleansed the blood system. Roots and leaves with natural cooling and detoxifying powers were boiled to remove excess heat and sugar from the bloodstream.

2.  Herbal Decoction (Agbo Ìto Súgà) –
A mixture of selected herbs was boiled together to form a strong decoction. The warm herbal water was taken morning and evening to gradually stabilize the body. Some of the potent herbs that have recorded in a huge success in treatment of Diabetes include:
1)  Ewe Orogbo

The Healing Process in Traditional Practice
1.  Cooling the Body System – Herbs first reduce the internal heat responsible for dehydration and excessive thirst. This helps the body regain its natural calmness.
2.  Blood Cleansing and Sugar Balance – The herbal decoction purifies the blood, helping to normalize the sugar level and remove toxins.
3.  Strengthening Internal Organs – Continuous use of Agbo Ìto Súgà helps the liver, kidney, and pancreas regain balance, improving their natural function in blood regulation.
4.  Improved Energy and Clarity – With the system stabilized, energy returns gradually, fatigue reduces, and the body regains vitality.

Differences Between Yoruba and Modern Treatment
•  Method of Healing: Yoruba medicine addresses the cause through purification and natural regulation, while modern medicine relies on insulin and chemical control.
•  Duration of Healing: Traditional treatment takes time but restores total balance, while modern drugs often require lifelong dependence.
•  Naturalness: Yoruba remedies use pure roots and leaves without chemical additives; modern medicine uses synthetic compounds.

Safety First: Important Contraindications and Considerations
•  Pregnancy and Lactation:
Some potent herbs are unsafe for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Forefathers insisted these must never be used during this time.
•  Underlying Conditions:
Individuals with kidney, liver, or other chronic illnesses should not use strong herbal decoctions without proper guidance from a knowledgeable herbalist.
•  Source Quality:
Herbs must be obtained from clean, natural, and chemical-free environments to ensure they heal rather than harm.
•  Proper Dosage:
Agbo preparations should be taken in moderate, guided portions. Overuse may weaken the body or cause excess cooling.
